Family First – a person’s favourite picture
By Holly Robson

This was the question I asked pretty much everyone I know, and then asked them to send it to me. The results were both heart-warming and varied. It was amazing to me what people chose, and how honest and raw they were. It just goes to show that a photo can have so many memories and emotions attached to it, and that even years later, they can evoke these feelings like it was yesterday.

Some people also chose to tell me why it was their favourite photo.

Here are some of their reasons for their favourite photo:

“My mum had a career change and went back to Uni to complete another degree. It was a really rough time for her and I am so proud to have watched her walk across the stage, and start a new job where she feels fulfilled and appreciated. It’s rare you get to watch your parents achieve the things they usually watch you achieve, so it felt so special. My dad wasn’t able to come to the graduation, so we FaceTimed him and I snuck a little screenshot. I love this photo because he just looks so happy and proud, and I just feel the love pouring from this photo. It makes me so grateful to have a model for positive relationships, and proof that no matter the age or challenges faced, you’re always capable of great things.

“Also my dead dog is in the profile pic for my dad so that’s nice. I miss him. #ripcharlie”

“My grandchildren are very important to me and a big part of my life.”

“A photo of me and my sexy DJ husband in Barcelona, it remains iconic because I miss him.”

“That’s my fav pic ever, my dad making a BBQ for me and all my friends.”

“I’ve got so many photos from my hikes and runs but this one always makes me laugh. Just some sheep doing their thing with the nice evening skies behind. The silhouette of the sheep and the ridge makes it better I think.”

“This one because it has good memories attached of my friends surprising me for my birthday, and I’ve loved living with my best friends in third year.”

“This one because he looks really cute in it and I miss him a lot.”

“Back when the whole house got on. Good times”

“My grandad and brother in one of my favourite places in the world.”

“I love my mum! Put that in your magazine. Direct quote.”

“This one from when I was young, it’s a photo of me dancing with my Uncle John who passed away a few years ago. I was just always so drawn to him and so happy around him, I just like that you can see that on my face.”

“That’s my fav photo ever, it’s of my sister. #siblinggoals”

“This always makes me smile. We were so relaxed and happy.”

A lot of people struggled with this. How do you pick just one? Who would you want to be in it? It’s a simple enough question, but when you actually think about, what would your favourite photo be?
